Q: Why use a shorter rope for plowing?

A:  It reduces the wear on your longer more exspensive winch line.

Is easier on your winch uses the higher tourque of the smaller diameter.

prevents your rope from being bound or tangled.

less rope on the winch allows the drum to cool and keep winch cooler from multiple uses.

Hello
Many of you are thinking about purchasing a synthetic winch rope for your atv winches.
As you may know not all winch ropes are not created equal i will try to answer some common questions.
1.) What is the difference between Amsteel blue made by Sampson rope and the blue steel brand(made by whom ever)
Sampson rope makes  2 grades of Amsteel ropes: Standard Amsteel and the Amsteel blue™ each which comes in variety of colors. yes it sounds confusing to order an amsteel blue™ rope in red color. The main difference between the 2 Amsteel ropes is their strength & price.
Amsteel blue™ is about 15% stronger & more expensive than just the Amsteel so one would definitely want to make sure they are buying Amsteel blue™ rope for their winching application,
Amsteel blue is size for size as strong as steel cable. (some advertizers will mislead you saying it is 7-12 times stronger than steel) this is true if you do a pound for pound comparison. but i don't know who would want to put a 1.5 diameter rope on their at winch.
Amsteel Blue™: Winch Line is made from Samson's® 12-Strand Amsteel Blue, a Twelve-Strand single Braid that is made from the world's strongest fiber, Dyneema® SK75 which is a product of the Nederland's. Amsteel™ Blue Winch Line is coated with Polyurethane for color and UV protection. Amsteel™ Blue is commonly used in the marine industry, so Amsteel™ Blue does not mildew and it floats on water. Amsteel™ Blue is also used in recreational activities such as ATV and 4X4 winching applications.
With this being said the Amsteel blue is a smooth to the touch and almost slick like a greased rope.
Blue steel: made from unkown fibers is a very coarse rope which one would prefer to use gloves with.

2.) What size rope to buy?
Amsteel should be swapped for size to size . if you have 3/16 x 50' rope then you should use 3/16 x 50' rope however some people do opt for a 1/4 rope but then you have to sacrifice the length.

3.) Why use a short piece for plowing?
You should use a short piece for plowing to prevent the rope from getting bird nested in you spool. Also it will save you wear on your longer rope. I suggest an uhmw roller fairlead for this.
One thing to point out when plowing one should never lift the plow up to the stop point every time they lift the plow, this causes extreme wear on the winches and rope or cable. Just because you have a 3000lb winch doesn't mean you can't snap a 4000# rope or cable. I noticed the warn winches are highly Underrated if they say 3000# winch i believe they are really a 5000# when you have only 1 or 2 revolutions on the spool. if your breaking cables and ropes constantly during plowing your doing something wrong.

The 3 things I see a lot are
First is the rope is spooled the wrong way on the winch due to reversed electrical hook up.
Second i see is the cable or rope wearing on an object.
Third i see is when someone backs up they hit the winch up switch and keep holding it till it binds out.

4.) Do i need a winch saver™?   YES if you want to protect your fairlead and rope or cable. Remember any sharp edge on the fairlead caused by the hook becomes a knife edge to the rope.

5.) CARE:  Synthetic rope will need more care than steel cable. after each use make sure you use a rag to wipe off or wash if you have heavy dirt build up. perhaps even pull out to dry.  when winding up the rope make sure you have all twist out of the rope and keep constant preasure so it winds evenly making sure not to leave gaps between each revolution since this will allow the rope to bind or bird nest.

6.) Fairleads:    metal roller fairleads can be used if they are new and rotate freely. but your best bet for plowing is a uhmw roller fairlead with stainless bolts to prevent the rollers from seizing. for trail ridding a uhmw hause fairlead, uhmw rollerfairlead. new steel roller fairlead or an aluminum fairlead is acceptable
